Someone Told Me It's All Happening At the Zoo

It turns out that KC has a pretty darn good zoo. When Jean's parents were here earlier this month, we took Adam to the zoo for the day. Of course, he's not old enough to get much of anything out of the experience, but it was a good excuse for us to check out the zoo and to get the heck out of the house for a while on a surprisingly nice day (low 80s, not humid).

Little did we realize that the KC zoo is downright huge, so we didn't even see the whole thing. We had to skip the Australia section because the Africa portion took up the whole afternoon.

So, if you happen to be in the area (HINT, HINT) and you have kids who might be interested (HINT, HINT) or you might be interested (HINT, HINT), we might be persuaded to go back.

The KC zoo has a baby zebra.

Though he wasn't interested in a lot of what the zoo had to offer, he did get quite a kick out of...

Lemurs! They were playing right in front of him, and he watched for quite a while. There also are a number of places to sit in rocking chairs and rest. We were not shy about using them.

Go West Young Man

Adam and Jean's trip to the northwest (many, many weeks ago) was a success. He was really good on the plane. He slept a good bit of the flight and ate or played when he was awake.

While they were there, Jean and Adam got to see a lot of our friends and relatives, which was great. They also had to conduct a little business on the trip, which was not as great. It meant looong trips in the car. Jean's mom Beth rode with them on their dealer visits in Washington and Oregon. Before leaving for the northwest, Adam was pretty darn good in the car. After the trip, he was not a fan. He got pretty darn sick of staring at the back seat, even for very short trips. He's gotten better since then, but for a while he was not a good passenger.

At the end of Jean and Adam's stay, most of my family was able to assemble at Jean's parents' place. In fact, they were able to gather all but two of my parents' grandkids.

Unfortunately, Jean forgot to bring a camera, but we've managed to collect a few pictures. Here ya go:

Like Miley Cyrus, Adam just can't say no to Annie Leibowitz.

Overheard

... in the men's locker room at the gym today:

Son (about 4 years old): Daddy?
Father: Yeah?
Son: You have a big wee-wee.
Father: (awkward pause) Thanks, son. When you grow up, yours will get big too.
Son: How does it get big?
Father: (awkward pause) Just like the rest of your body gets bigger.
Son: How does your body get bigger?

At this point, dad beat a hasty retreat from the conversation. Good thing too, because "good food and exercise" really wasn't going to cut it when the boy starts asking how one exercises that part of the body.

And now I'm thinking of all the surreal conversations I'm going to have over the next decade or so. Why was I not warned?
